Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandma and godparents. As a child, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford was first attracted to acting as a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one month, she decided that it wasn't the right fit for her. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get the position on her 4th application. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. The actor would go on to have frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but, by that time she already had made her TV debut on the 1991 season of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". During the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. The regular theatre work she performed has led to her joining The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedy, which were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
